TVer is a region-locked Japanese streaming website. A VPN lets you use it from anywhere by spoofing your current location. In our walkthrough, we explain how to watch TVer outside Japan without the website or your IPS finding out.
If you want to watch TVer while travelling, you need to learn how to use a secure VPN. Our recommended tools will unlock TVer by giving your device a temporary IP address from Japan.

Which VPNs work with TVer?
Using a VPN to watch TVer outside Japan
At a glance: To use TVer from any country in the world, download a VPN, sign in to your account, connect to a server based in Japan and then reload the site.
1. Install a VPN to your PC
To stream shows on TVer while outside Japan, you need a VPN. We’ve highlighted a couple of our favourites on this page, so shop around and see which option works best for your needs.
2. Sign in to your VPN
Once you’ve created your VPN account, sign in with your email and password. It should only take a couple of seconds to register your details.
3. Connect to a server for TVer
As TVer is aimed at a Japanese audience, you need to connect to a Japan-based VPN server to watch from overseas.
To do this using ExpressVPN, open the app, tap the three dots icon and use the search box to enter a Japanese location. Select the power icon to connect and wait for the green light.
Why is TVer not working with my VPN?
If the TVer website identifies that you’re trying to stream content from outside of Japan, your connection could be blocked. However, a trusted VPN can still help you stream TV networks from anywhere in the world, even if you’re traveling.
VPNs that fail to pair with TVer aren’t hiding your real location. The VPN servers you have available to you through your current VPN may be blacklisted by the TVer website.
TVer fixes
1. Try a different VPN server
It’s annoying, but VPN servers can go down without warning. If TVer doesn’t work for you at the moment, the issue may lie with your VPN server – swapping to an alternative could fix things.
Try disconnecting from the server that you’re using with TVer. Precise steps will vary depending on your provider, but ExpressVPN users can select the three dots icon to see a list of alternative servers in the same country.
2. Update your VPN
If your VPN doesn’t unlock the TVer website, check you’re using the latest version. We say that because a technical issue could have been fixed with a recent update.
To update your VPN on a computer, load up the VPN and choose Settings. Clicking Update will usually take you to the VPN provider’s website, where you can learn more about what’s new.
If you have an Android, open the Play Store, tap your profile and then Manage apps and device. Choose Update or Update all. From an iPhone, open the App Store and then your user profile in the top-right corner of the screen.
3. Message VPN Customer Support
The most popular VPNs have teams that address technical issues. If you’re having trouble watching shows on TVer through a VPN, reach out to them for assistance.
Open your VPN provider’s website and head to the Support page. Some VPNs provide a 24/7 live chat service for their members, which is good news if you’re forced to reach out late in the day.
4. Reset your VPN
When troubleshooting, we suggest restarting your PC or phone and then relaunching your VPN. If that doesn’t get rid of error messages on TVer, completely uninstall and reinstall your VPN. Open both your VPN and TVer to see what the results are.
5. Check your internet
Disconnect from your wi-fi and reconnect. With your connection restored, try your VPN again and restart your router if needed. Check for a button on the back of your router (you might need a pin to press it down), or consult the manual.
You should also run a free internet speed tool such as Ookla and compare results alongside your ISP’s ‘minimum guaranteed speed’ promise. Contact your ISP if your connection is unstable outside of VPN use.
More TVer fixes:
Check that your firewall allows VPN use. If you’re experiencing issues on desktop, make sure your VPN is mentioned in the ‘Allow’ list. On Windows, head to open Windows Security > Allow an app through the firewall. On Mac, try System Settings > Network > Firewall.
Are your details public due to a DNS leak? A broken VPN can’t conceal your IP address and location on TVer. To test it yourself, disable the VPN and head to the IP Address Lookup tool. Note down your IP address. Then, turn on your VPN and run the test once again – if you aren’t assigned a new IP and location, your VPN is faulty.
Are you tiring out your VPN? When streaming, gaming and using social media at the same time, your VPN might struggle to keep up. We suggest you close a couple of apps to test if doing so has a noticeable impact.
Re-enter your VPN username and password. Double-check your credentials. If you can’t remember the details, choose the ‘Forgot’ option on your VPN provider’s website.
Clear cache and cookies. On Chrome, go to Settings > Privacy and security > Clear browsing data. On Safari, go to Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data.
Check the VPN servers you’re trying are online. If you can’t connect to a server, your provider might be dealing with an outage. The best providers are transparent about this and actively update their server status online.
Are you using the latest version of your web browser? Your current web browser version might be incompatible with your browser-based VPN. If you’ve already updated your VPN, make sure you update your browser as well. On Chrome, you would go to Settings > About Chrome.
