Viki has a vast library of Asian TV shows and movies, but it’s region-locked – that means you can’t use it in some countries without a VPN. If Viki isn’t working with your VPN, have a read through our list of 5 quick fixes.
Most of the time, VPNs fail to unlock the Viki website because they’re broken and therefore revealing your true location. Keep scrolling for a list of solutions.
In this article:
Which VPNs work with Viki?
Can I watch Viki abroad?
You can, but you’ll need a reliable VPN if you’re based in a country that isn’t officially supported by Viki. A VPN spoofs your location, which means the website will think you’re in a supported country even if you’re not.
The broadcaster has a help page on its website that confirms where Viki is available.
Why is Viki not working with my VPN?
Viki is a region-locked website designed for people in specific countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas. If the site identifies your IP address and sees that you’re not in an approved territory, the website will lock up and you won’t be able to watch shows such as Warm on a Cold Night and Our Secret.
In summary, common Viki problems are:
- The website has blacklisted realised you are using a VPN and killed your server
- You have a bad internet connection
- Cookies are revealing your real location, instead of the location you’re trying to spoof
- Your VPN is revealing your IP address to Viki
Viki fixes
1. Check your VPN is up to date
If your VPN doesn’t unlock Viki, check you’re using the most recent version.
To update your VPN from a computer, load up the VPN and then choose Settings. Clicking Update will usually take you to the VPN provider’s website, where you’ll learn what’s new.
If you’re using Android, open the Play Store, tap your profile and then choose Manage apps and device. Select Update. From an iPhone, open the App Store and tap your profile in the top-right corner of the screen.
2. Try a different server
VPN servers die every so often. If Viki isn’t unlocking, the issue may lie with your VPN server, so swapping to an alternative could be the answer.
3. Message Customer Support
The most popular VPNs employ teams to address technical issues. If you’re having trouble using Viki abroad, reach out to them for assistance.
Access your VPN provider’s website and head to the Support or Contact Us pages. Some VPNs even provide a 24/7 live chat service for their members, which is great if you’re reaching out late in the day.
4. Reset your current VPN
Restart your PC or phone and then load up your VPN again. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, uninstall and reinstall your VPN. Open both your VPN and Viki to see what the results are.
5. Check your internet
To do this, disconnect from your wi-fi entirely and reconnect. Once your connection is back, try your VPN once more and consider restarting your internet router for a full reset – you’ll spot a button on the back.
You should also run a free internet speed tool and compare results alongside your ISP’s ‘minimum guaranteed speed’ promise. Contact your ISP if your connection is unstable outside of VPN use.
More Viki fixes:
If you’re on a phone, clear your cache and cookies. From an iPhone, you need to choose Settings > General > iPhone storage, then choose the Viki app. Select Offload app. On Android, go to Settings > Apps > Viki > Storage > Clear cache.
Make sure you aren’t the victim of a DNS leak. Ineffective VPNs fail to conceal your actual IP address and location while accessing Viki. To verify this, disable your VPN and navigate to the IP Address Lookup tool. Record your usual IP address, then activate your VPN, rerun the test, and observe whether those details change. If there is no obvious difference, your VPN isn’t operating correctly.
If you’re using Viki on desktop, clear your cache and cookies. On Chrome, go to Settings > Privacy and security > Clear browsing data. On Safari, go to Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data.
Re-enter your VPN username and password. Double-check your credentials. If you can’t remember your details, choose the ‘Forgot’ option on your VPN provider’s website.
Check the VPN servers are online. If you can’t connect to a server, your provider might be experiencing an outage.
