Which VPNs work at hotels?
Why is my VPN not working at a hotel?
If the website you’re trying to access discovers you’re browsing from an unauthorised territory, your connection could be blocked. However, a trusted VPN can still help you stream content from anywhere in the world, even if you’re traveling around.
Your VPN isn’t working on hotel wifi and that’s probably because it’s not hiding your real location. The VPN servers you have available to you through your current VPN might be blacklisted by the website you’re trying to unlock. By swapping to a better one, you’ll be able to browse the web without being interrupted.
Reasons why a VPN fails at a hotel:
- Your VPN server has been cut off by the website or service you’re trying to access
- Cookies are telling websites about your real location, not your spoofed one
- The VPN is leaking your IP address, which causes websites to block traffic
Hotel VPN fixes
1. Update your VPN
If your VPN isn’t helping you while you’re staying away from home, make sure you’re running the latest version.
On Android, open the Google Play store, tap your user profile in the top-right corner of the screen and then Manage apps and device. On iOS, open the Apple App Store and tap your user profile in the top-right corner of the screen.
2. Try a different server
VPN servers can die sometimes. Disconnect from the current server you’re using and then swap to an alternative based in the same country.
The country of origin you pick obviously varies depending on what you’re trying to use. If you wanted to stream from the My5 website, for example, you’d need a UK-based server.
3. Use Customer Support
Our recommended providers all manage support teams. From a computer, head to your VPN provider’s website and find the Support or Contact us pages. Some VPNs offer a live chat service for members. Explain your situation and mention that you’re trying to use a hotel internet connection.
4. Restart your VPN
This trick often works with computer issues and the same goes with VPNs – give it a try if your hotel VPN is failing. If that doesn’t work, delete and reinstall your VPN.
5. Test your internet at the hotel
VPN problems are sometimes tied to your own internet connection or your hotel wifi in this instance. Disconnect from your wi-fi network and then reconnect. Try and run your VPN once again.
More hotel VPN fixes:
Clear cache and cookies. On Google Chrome, go to Settings > Privacy and security > Clear browsing data. On Safari, go to Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data. Run your VPN over hotel wifi again.
Are your details public due to a DNS leak? A broken VPN can’t conceal your IP address and location at a hotel. To test it yourself, disable the VPN and head to the IP Address Lookup tool. Note down your IP address. Then, turn on your VPN and run the test once again – if you aren’t assigned a new IP and location, your VPN is faulty.
Double-check your login credentials. If you can’t remember, get a reset link sent to your inbox.
Check your VPN servers are active. Your provider might be experiencing an outage. In other words, your VPN is at fault instead of the hotel’s internet connection.
Is your firewall blocking your VPN? On Windows, head to open Windows Security > Allow an app through the firewall. On Mac, try System Settings > Network > Firewall.
Does your web browser need updating? Your current web browser version might be incompatible with your browser-based VPN.
