Vudu is geo-restricted, which means you might have trouble using Vudu outside the US. You can enjoy Vudu abroad using a VPN, but what if your current VPN breaks? Our guide will help you solve the problem if Vudu isn’t working with your VPN.
In our no-nonsense guide, we explain how you can use Vudu while travelling without being hit by errors. If your current VPN fails, that probably means Vudu has blacklisted the server you’re trying to connect with.
In this article:
Which VPNs work with Vudu?
Why is Vudu not working with my VPN?
Here’s the simple answer: you’re trying to use the website from a restricted territory (outside of the US) and the website knows it. A superior VPN can help you solve that problem.
How does Vudu detect my VPN?
If your VPN isn’t very good and doesn’t hide your location 100% of the time, Vudu will blacklist the server you’re using, which means your VPN is useless. Bad VPNs take a long time to replace blacklisted servers, which means you have no way of gaining access to films streaming on Vudu’s website.
On the other hand, the best VPNs we’ve seen do a brilliant job of replacing blacklisted servers. That means that even if Vudu disables a server, a replacement will be up sooner rather than later.
In summary:
- Vudu might be blacklisting your VPN servers, which means you can’t stream films
- You’re using a poor network connection that limits the power of the VPN
- Cookies nestled in your browser are disclosing your real location instead of a spoofed location
- Your VPN isn’t doing its job effectively and is actually revealing your IP address to websites and apps
Vudu fixes
1. Update your VPN
- iPhone users: open the App Store. In the top-right corner, tap your user profile. From there, you can check for updates.
- Android users: open the Play Store. Select your profile icon in the corner and then choose Manage apps and devices.
- Computer users: launch your VPN and go to Settings. You’ll find an Update button.
2. Experiment with a different server
VPN servers can be a bit sluggish sometimes, so switch to a different VPN server for Vudu if needed. The exact steps for this can differ depending on the VPN service you’re using. ExpressVPN users select the three dots icon to access a list of alternative servers within the same country.
3. Try Customer Support
The VPN services we’ve rounded up in this guide have customer support teams able to lend a hand with technical troubles.
4. Turn your VPN off and on again
If the above fixes don’t have an effect, uninstall and reinstall your VPN. Then, open your VPN and Vudu to see if the issue has been resolved.
5. Test your internet connection
First, disconnect from your wi-fi, reconnect and then try your VPN again. If that doesn’t help, you can perform a full reset by restarting your router.
Put your internet connection to the test using a speed tool such as this one from Ookla. Compare the results you get (download speeds) with your ISP’s minimum guaranteed speed.
More Vudu fixes:
Check your firewall. On Windows, open Windows Security > Allow an app through the firewall. And from a Mac, try System Settings > Network > Firewall.
Are you using the right browser? Check your web browser is compatible with your Vudu VPN. If you’ve updated your VPN, update your browser to match. On Chrome, access Settings > About Chrome.
Re-enter VPN username and password. Check if you’ve entered your VPN login details correctly. If you haven’t, Vudu obviously won’t work with your VPN.
Clear cache and your cookies. In Chrome, try Settings > Privacy and security > Clear browsing data. On Safari, go to Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data.
Check to see if you’ve been hit by a DNS leak. A DNS (domain name system) leak means your usual IP address and location is visible to websites and apps, even if you have a VPN running. We suggest you try the IP Address Lookup tool to see if your IP address changes when you activate your VPN and visit Vudu. If not, that’s a sure sign your VPN is broken.
Check the VPN servers. If you can’t connect to a server, your provider might be at fault. The best providers (we like ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Ivacy and PureVPN) are quick to fix dodgy servers.
